Things to See

If you are looking for nonstop adventure, with a new experience around every corner, then stay on I-77 or I-81, because Fries is not the place for you. But if you are ready to slow down, and enjoy a relaxing day or weekend, I encourage you to come visit.  In Fries  you have the beginning of the New River Trail State Park. There are bicycle rentals available. This trail has an excellent surface for both biking and hiking. Two restaurants offer you hometown cooking.  The Back-porch Gallery offers you an opportunity to buy work from local artists, such as my cousin Ravin Bilbrey. They also have books from local authors, including myself, my cousin Becky Moore, and J. Wade Gilley.  Some of the best bass and catfish waters in Virginia is in the section of New River within 2 miles of the town.  Fishing guides are available. Limited lodging is available in Fries itself, but within 20 miles of the town are several motels, cabins and B & B’s. The Blue Ridge Parkway is only 40 minutes away, and within 90 minutes of Fries are over a dozen wineries which offer wine-tasting. Events that you must attend is the annual Fries Fiddlers Convention, usually held the middle of August and the New River Festival in September.   Fries was the birthplace of some of the early pioneers in the country music recording industry.  So if you are ever traveling I-77 from North Carolina or West Virginia, or I-81 from Tennessee or Virginia, take a day to stop and smell the roses, in Fries, Virginia.
