Richard Carico, in my novel, was inspired by Richard “Dickie” Carrico who served as local county deputy, State Police Officer, and Carroll County Sheriff.  Like Bruce, Dickie knew when to be tough and when to be a friend.

Bruce Smith succeeded his father, and served the town of Fries for over forty years, until the early 70’s.  Bruce was well-liked. I considered him a perfect small-town police chief, with the proper balance of understanding and discipline.
